"Taming
of the Shrew" Marriage, money and misadventure will take center stage when Commonwealth Shakespeare Company brings "The Taming of the Shrew" free to Boston audiences this summer with three weeks of performances on Boston Common. Noted stage and screen performers Jennifer Dundas and Darren Pettie will star as Kate and Petruchio in a production directed by Wang Vice President for Artistic Programming and CSC Artistic Director Steven Maler. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. from July 22 through August 13. The stage will be set in a new location on the Parade Grounds near the corner of Beacon Street, parallel to Charles Street. This production marks the company's 11th annual Free Shakespeare on The Common offering. Last year's production of "Hamlet" drew more than 93,000; since its inception, CSC has played to 750,000 theatergoers. A classic comedy of deception and disguises, "The Taming of the Shrew" has always been one of Shakespeare's most popular works. It tells the story of a wealthy merchant and his two daughters; the young and kind Bianca and the conversely fierce and forthright Kathleen. Bianca, who has no shortage of suitors, is forbidden to marry before her older sister is wed. So the crude, fortune-hunting Petruchio is enlisted to court Kathleen. With her father's authority, the two are married and Petruchio is on a mission to tame his wild bride. Newton native Jennifer Dundas has worked extensively on Broadway, playing roles in the revival of "The Glass Menagerie" starring Sally Field at The Kennedy Center, Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia" opposite Billy Cruddup, "The Little Foxes" with Stockard Channing, "Ah Wilderness!" and "Grownups." She has also been seen in the feature films "Changing Lanes," "First Wives Club" and "Lorenzo's Oil" and on television in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," Law & Order: SVU" and "Judging Amy." Darren Pettie will be making his CSC debut. A Julliard alumnus, he has performed at Playwrights Horizon, Primary Stages, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Public Theatre and the Atlantic Theatre Company. He is regularly seen on the popular television hit "Crossing Jordan" and has appeared on "CSI," "Law & Order: SVU" and "Line of Fire." In addition to "The Taming of the Shrew," The Wang Center for the Performing Arts will present "Celebrate Shakespeare," a series of workshops and activities on Sunday, August 6.
