Wang Celebrates Shakespeare!

Free Events On Boston Common, August 6

With three stages, strolling performers and backstage tours, Boston Common will be alive with The Bard when The Wang Center for the Performing Arts presents "Celebrate Shakespeare" on Sunday, August 6. All events are free and open to the public.

Sponsored by John Hancock, the event will feature a special guest appearance by actor Ty Giordano in addition to workshops, readings and interactive games, all leading up to a performance of "The Taming of the Shrew" by the Wang Center's Commonwealth Shakespeare Company.

During the four weeks leading up to "Celebrate Shakespeare," the Wang Center's Education Department will canvas the city, offering more than 100 community workshops with support from 11 partner organizations in six partner communities. Workshop participants will show off their acting abilities in showcases during "Celebrate" on August 6.

Special performances on the Common's three stages will include: New England native Giordano (known for his roles in Deaf West's "Big River" and the recent films "The Family Stone" and "A Lot Like Love") in a scene from "The Tempest," to be presented bilingually in ASL and English; and Boston actor Will Lyman reprising his role as Prospero in "The Tempest."

The partner neighborhoods and community organizations include: Chinatown -- Wang YMCA and Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center; Dorchester -- Dotwell & Freedom House; East Boston -- East Boston YMCA & ZUMIX, Inc.; Mattapan -- Mattapan Community Centers & ABCD/Mattapan Family Service Center; South End -- Castle Square Tenants Organization & City Stage Co.; Deaf Community -- Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

"Celebrate Shakespeare" activities begin at 4:30 p.m., with the performance of "The Taming of the Shrew" scheduled at 7:00 p.m. The performance will be ASL interpreted.
