Rodgers
& Hammerstein’s "South Pacific"
September 27 – October 2, 2011
Boston Opera House
“Simply Wonderful! Beguiling Theatrical Magic!” hailed the
New York Post. This new production of "South Pacific"
is based on the 2008 Tony Award winning Lincoln Center Theater production,
directed by Bartlett Sher. Set on a tropical island during World War II,
the musical tells the sweeping, romantic story of two couples and how
their happiness is threatened by the realities of war and by their own
prejudices. The beloved score includes “Some Enchanted Evening,”
“I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “This
Nearly Was Mine” and “There is Nothin’
Like a Dame.” Based on James Michener’s Pulitzer
Prize winning book Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers &
Hammerstein’s "South Pacific" has music by Richard
Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and
a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan.
"La
Cage aux Folles"
December 5 – 18, 2011
Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theatre
Winner of three Tony Awards including the award for Best
Musical Revival, this new production of "La Cage aux Folles"
was the biggest hit of the 2010 Broadway season. "La Cage" tells
the story of Georges, the owner of a glitzy nightclub in lovely Saint-Tropez,
and his partner Albin, who moonlights as the glamorous chanteuse Zaza.
When Georges' son brings his fiancée's conservative parents home
to meet the flashy pair, the bonds of family are put to the test as the
feather boas fly. "La Cage" is a touching tale of one family's
struggle to stay together, stay fabulous and above all else, stay true
to themselves!. With a glorious score and a dynamite cast featuring the
"notorious and dangerous Cagelles," "La Cage" is a
classic.
"American
Idiot"
January 24 – 29, 2012
Boston Opera House
Direct from Broadway, the smash-hit musical "American Idiot"
tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their
dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day's
Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard
of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When
September Ends,” “Holiday”
and the blockbuster title song, "American Idiot" boldly takes
the American musical where it’s never gone before. With direction
by Michael Mayer ("Spring Awakening"),
choreography by Stephen Hoggett ("Black
Watch") and orchestrations and arrangements by Tom
Kitt ("Next to Normal"), the result
is an experience Charles Isherwood of The New York Times called
“thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical
I’ve seen this year!”
"The
Addams Family"
February 7 - 19, 2012
Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theatre
A weird and wonderful family comes to devilishly delightful life. This
magnificently macabre new musical comedy is created by "Jersey
Boys" authors Marshall Brickman and
Rick Elice, Drama Desk-winning composer/lyricist
Andrew Lippa ("The Wild Party"),
choreographer Sergio Trujillo ("Jersey Boys")
and Olivier Award-winning director/designers Phelim
McDermott and Julian Crouch ("Shockheaded
Peter") with creative consultation by four-time Tony
Award winner Jerry Zaks. Definitely not the
same old song and dance, this is every parent’s nightmare. Your
little girl has suddenly become a young woman, and what’s worse,
she's has fallen deliriously in love with a sweet, smart young man from
a respectable family. Yes, Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of
darkness, has a “normal” boyfriend, and for parents Gomez
and Morticia, the shocking development will turn the Addams house downside
up. It’s a family portrait that’s completely off the wall.
"Les
Miserables"
March 13 – April 1, 2012
Boston Opera House
Cameron Mackintosh presents a brand new 25th
anniversary production of Boublil & Schönberg’s
legendary musical, "Les Miserables," with glorious new staging
and reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo.
This new production has been acclaimed by critics, fans and new audiences
and is breaking box office records wherever it goes. The New York
Times calls the show “an unquestionably spectacular production
from start to finish;” The London Times said the new show
was “a five star hit, astonishingly powerful;” and The
Star-Ledger added" This 'Les Miserables’ has improved
with age.”
