"Hairspray" At Reagle
August 12 - 22

The 42nd summer season at Reagle Music Theatre concludes with the popular musical "Hairspray." Performances at Robinson Theater in Waltham are set for August 12 - 22.

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical of 2003, "Hairspray" ran on Broadway for six years. With music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, the spirited, bubble-gummy, pop musical is based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name.

The 60's story follows stocky-but-sweet Baltimore teenager Tracy Turnblad who's got a dream to dance on TV's "Corny Collins Show." Against all odds, she actually gets a chance to audition, wins a spot on the show and becomes a local celebrity. She ultimately uses her influence to bring integration to the show. In the end, she proves that plus-size girls can have fun, too, and that everybody should have a chance to dance.

Marissa Perry will star as Tracy Turnblad, a role she played on Broadway as a replacement for original star Marissa Jaret Winokur.  The production will be directed and choreographed by Todd Michel Smith and Judine Somerville, six year veterans of the show's Broadway cast. The duo will recreate Jerry Mitchell’s original choreography.

The Reagle company also includes Dan Dowling, Jr. as Edna Turnblad, John Macero as Wilbur Turnblad, Mark Linehan as Corny Collins, Debra Thais Evans as Motormouth Maybelle, Susan Scannell as Velma Von Tussle and Nick Paciero as Link Larkin.

Musical theater fans will remember that Matthew Morrison, now seen weekly on television's "Glee," original played the heartthrob role of Link Larkin.
