Broadway Stars Appear In "Scoundrels"
July 21 - August 2 At Cape Playhouse

As the third production of its summer season, The Cape Playhouse, America’s longest running professional summer theater, will present the regional debut of the Broadway hit musical "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" from July 21 - August 2. The production features such Broadway talents as Brent Barrett, Dee Hoty, Perry Ojeda, Stephanie Youell, Heather Parcels and John Scherer. The Cape Playhouse is located in Dennis on Route 6A.

Jeffrey Lane and David Yazbek’s award-winning musical will be directed by Mark Martino and choreographed by Dennis Jones ("Legally Blonde") with musical direction by Phil Reno ("The Producers" and "The Drowsy Chaperone").

Based on the popular motion picture of the same name, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is set on the French Riviera and centers on the duplicitous activities of suave Lawrence Jameson (Barrett), who makes his living by sweet-talking wealthy women out of their fortunes, and boorish, small-town crook Freddy Benson (Ojeda), who swindles the ladies by lavishly fabricating a story about his ailing grandmother.

When the two meet, they soon realize the Riviera is not big enough for both of them. So they devise a wager. The first to obtain $50,000 from a beautiful young heiress (Youell) may remain on the island, while the other will leave, never to be heard from again.

Brent Barrett (at left) most recently appeared as The Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" in Las Vegas. On Broadway, he played Billy Flynn in the Tony Award-winning hit, "Chicago," and starred opposite Reba McEntire in the Broadway revival of Irving Berlin's "Annie Get Your Gun." His other Broadway credits include "Grand Hotel," "Dance A Little Closer," "Candide," the revival of "West Side Story," "Brigadoon" at New York City Opera, and the Encore! production of "The Pajama Game." While appearing in London, he received an Olivier Award nomination for his starring role in the West End premiere of the Tony Award-winning revival of "Kiss Me, Kate," which was subsequently recorded for broadcast on PBS.

Dee Hoty, an original star of "Mamma Mia!," has graced Broadway stages in productions of "Footloose," "The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public," and "City of Angels." She also charmed audiences starring opposite Keith Carradine in the original Broadway company of "The Will Rogers Follies," picking up a Tony Award nomination along the way as Best Actress in a Musical.

Perry Ojeda has performed on Broadway in "On The Town," "Blood Brothers" and "Imaginary Friends." As well, Stephanie Youell is fresh from Kander & Ebb's "Curtains," Heather Parcells has just appeared in the revival of "A Chorus Line"and John Scherer was seen last season in "LoveMusik," having previously appeared opposite Betty Buckley in "Sunset Boulevard."

The summer season at the Cape Playhouse will continue with: "Leader of the Pack," Aug. 4-16; "Born Yesterday," Aug. 18-30; and "The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith," Sept. 1-13.
