Cape Playhouse Opens 82nd Summer Season

America’s longest running professional summer theatre, The Cape Playhouse, celebrate its 82nd Anniversary Season this summer with six main-stage productions running between June 23 and September 13. The theater is located at 820 Main Street, Route 6A in Dennis, Massachusetts.

Producing Artistic Director Evans Haile has assembled a schedule set to include the following:

“Marc Salem’s Mind Games” (June 23 -July 5) is a journey into the power and possibilities of the human mind. Using psychological techniques, a sharp eye, a quick wit, and 20 years of training, Marc Salem has entranced the world by exploring the human mind through a series of hilarious, astounding and mystifying mind games.

The Tony Award winning “A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine” (July 7 - 19) combines two one-act musicals for an evening of great fun. Act One is a singing, tap-dancing tribute to Hollywood’s Golden Age set at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, with Act Two a madcap Marx Brothers musical of door slamming lunacy set in a stately mansion.

The season continues from July 21 - August 2 with the bright and funny musical “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” Based on the popular film of the same name, this lively show took Broadway by storm with 11 Tony nominations. As the story unfolds, a debonair con man and a clever young American rogue compete to swindle wealthy women at a glamorous resort in the French Riviera. Broadway's Brent Barrett and Dee Hoty will lead the cast.

Featuring the hits of the Ronettes, the Shangri-Las and Connie Francis, “Leader of the Pack”(August 4 -16) is a 60’s song and dance journey of go-go boot chart-toppers from the legendary writer Ellie Greenwich. Look for “Chapel of Love,” “Be My Baby,” “Hanky Panky,” “Da Doo Ron Ron,” and more.

“Born Yesterday," August 18 - 30, is Garson Kanin's sharp comedy combining a Pygmalion story with Washington shenanigans as a shady tycoon hires a handsome journalist to tutor his bubble-headed, show business mistress. A little knowledge becomes a dangerous thing when she decides to turn the tables on her crooked junk-yard baron and his boozy lawyer. The cast will feature Pamela Hunt, Jeff McCarthy and David Furr.

The season concludes September 1 - 13 with “The Devil’s Music: The Life & Blues of Bessie Smith.” R&B diva Miche Braden captures the feisty personality and soulful richness of Bessie Smith, the "Empress of the Blues." Born in a one-room shack in Tennessee, Smith started singing the blues in early life and went on to become an international sensation.

On summer mornings, the Cape Cod Center for the Arts presents Theater for Children on the stage of the Cape Playhouse, providing a terrific way to introduce young people to joys of live theatre. From July 3 - August 22, Theater for Children will offer performances on Thursdays and Fridays at 9:30 and 11:30 AM.
