Boston Playwrights' Theatre
Presents
"The Oil Thief"

Boston Playwrights' Theatre will present Joyce Van Dyke's "The Oil Thief" from November 6 - 23. Van Dyke is also the author of "A Girl’s War" and "Love in the Gulf."

Featuring Melinda Lopez and Will Lyman, "The Oil Thief" is an intimate story of a love partnership in jeopardy.  When Amy (Lopez), an oil geologist, has a chance meeting with a young translator in Africa (Sheldon Best), it forces her to rethink her personal responsibilities in the world, both professionally and with her long-time partner (Lyman). The production will be directed by Judy Braha.

"The Oil Thief" was commissioned in 2006 by the Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Project, and had a staged reading at New Repertory Theatre earlier this year.

Van Dyke's short plays include "The Earring," published in Laugh Lines: Short Comic Plays (2007) and first produced in the Boston Theater Marathon (Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, 2005); and "Not My Real Mother," about the historic meeting between Tennessee Williams and Mother Teresa (Boston Theater Marathon, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, 2007).

Van Dyke is a Huntington Theatre Company Playwriting Fellow (2007-09), a MacDowell Colony Fellow, and recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Playwriting Finalist Grant.  A graduate of Boston University’s playwriting program at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, she taught Shakespeare at Harvard Extension School and Wellesley, before concentrating on playwriting.

Judy Braha has been a director, teacher and arts advocate in New England for over two decades.  Currently head of the M.F.A. Directing Program at Boston University School of Theater, she has directed award-winning productions at the Huntington Theater Company ("The Deal"), The New Ehrlich Theater ("Bent," "House of Blue Leaves," "Steaming") and The Nickerson Theater ("The Foreigner," "The Price").

Ms. Braha has also directed for the Merrimack Repertory Theater, Ensemble Studio Theater, North Shore Music Theater, New Repertory Theater, Nora Theater Co., Emerson Stage and the American Stage Company in St. Petersburg, Fla. Currently, she and Joyce Van Dyke are developing a new play about the legacy of the Armenian Genocide.
