“Spamalot” Returns To Boston
January 15, 2008

"Monty Python’s Spamalot," the Tony Award winning Best Musical of 2005, is bringing its fish-slapping, cow-flying, insult-hurling mayhem back to Boston for a limited engagement at The Opera House. Performances begin January 15, 2008. Tickets are on sale now.

Directed by Mike Nichols and with a book by Eric Idle, the show is “lovingly ripped-off” from the internationally famous comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”Music and lyrics are by Idle and John Du Prez.

Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail, “Spamalot” features a chorus of dancing divas, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and one legless Knight.

Fans know that Monty Python is not a person, but rather a very funny group of British actors (and one American) -- Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. Their infamous television series, “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” aired on the BBC from 1969 to 1974, and remains in cult-status syndication throughout the world. The group's other films include "And Now For Something Completely Different," "Monty Python's Life of Brian" and "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life."

"Spamalot” picked up three Tony Awards as well as Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards in 2005. Additionally, the original cast recording received the 2006 Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.

“Spamalot” became a sell-out on Broadway almost before its opening, while the national tour continues to do stellar business across America. A London production opened last fall at the Palace Theatre, a Las Vegas production opened this past spring, and plans are underway to bring the show to Australia in December of 2007. Idle is also reportedly at work on another Python-based musical called "Not The Messiah."
