Boston Theatre Works Premieres New Musical
At New York Theatre Festival
Prior To Boston Run

Boston Theatre Works makes its New York City producing debut with the world premiere of Kyle Jarrow’s "Love Kills,"opening at the New York Musical Theatre Festival on September 18. BTW Artistic Director Jason Southerland directs.

"Love Kills" follows Charlie Starkweather and Caril Fugate, teenage lovers charged with committing 11 murders in the course of a week. Under pressure to confess by dawn, facts blur and loyalties shift.  The question remains -- how far will you go for someone you love?

Based on the true story that inspired the films "Badlands" and "Natural Born Killers," this world-premiere emo (short for emotional) rock musical by Obie Award-winning playwright Kyle Jarrow ("A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant" and "Gorilla Man") explores the intersection of love and desire.

Originally commissioned and developed by Boston Theatre Works, "Love Kills" will open in Boston next May as part of the company's 10th Anniversary Season.

Southerland commented, “We’re thrilled to have been invited to bring 'Love Kills' to the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Kyle is a rare and unique voice in the musical theatre world and this prestigious festival is an incredible opportunity to showcase our work together before bringing it to our Boston audience.”

The cast is lead by American Idol semi-finalist Marisa Rhodes, making her New York stage debut and performing alongside veteran actors Deirdre O'Connell (NYSF's "Tis’ a Pity She’s a Whore;" LATC's "Stars in the Morning Sky," "Three Ways Home," "The Geography of Luck") and John Hickok (Broadway's "Little Women," "Aida,"  "Parade").  "Love Kills" also introduces Brandeis University graduate Eli Schneider to the New York stage as the murderous Starkweather.

Kyle Jarrow is a Brooklyn-based writer and musician. He won an Obie Award at the age of 24 for his Off- Broadway hit "A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant," which also had a successful run in Los Angeles in 2004.  The show was produced by BTW in 2006.

Kyle's follow-up play, "Armless." won the Overall Excellence Award at the New York International Fringe Festival, and productions of his plays "President Harding is a Rock Star" and "Gorilla Man" (also mounted at BTW) played in NYC to critical acclaim. His playwriting work has been presented at Performance Space 122, The John Houseman Theatre, NYTW, New Dramatists, The Flea, The Hangar Theatre and Dad's Garage in Atlanta, among others. Upcoming projects include a new musical collaboration with Duncan Sheik ("Spring Awakening") and a piece with Damon Intrabatrolo ("Bare").

Now in its fourth year, The New York Musical Theatre Festival premiered 99 new musicals during its previous three seasons, with more than a dozen of those shows transferring to successful off-Broadway and regional productions.  Hailed as "the Sundance of Musical Theatre," NYMF is widely regarded as the premier source for new material and talent discovery..

"Love Kills" will run September 18 -29 at the 45 Street Theatre in Manhattan. Tickets are available by visiting www.lovekillsthemusical.com.  For information on the upcoming Boston production, visit www.bostontheatreworks.com.
