Magic, mischief, and romantic misadventures are on the bill when the Citi Performing Arts Center Free Shakespeare on the Common production of  “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” comes to Boston Common July 24 - 29. The production is being directed by Steven Maler.

The public is also invited to enjoy Celebrate Shakespeare Day on Saturday, July 28.  A program of Citi Performing Arts Center Education, the multi-faceted free event features workshops, performances, backstage tours and lectures designed to enhance the public’s appreciation of The Bard’s work.

The cast of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” features Johnny Lee Davenport (at left -- with 28 of the Bard's plays to his credit) as Oberon, Mimi Bilinski as Titania, Antonio Edwards-Suarez as Puck, Hanna Wilson as Helena, Jason Bowen as Demetrius, Meghan Bradley as Hermia, Ed Hoopman as Lysander, Larry Coen as Peter Quince and Fred Sullivan, Jr. as Nick Bottom. 

One of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” follows four young lovers through mistaken identities and humorous misfortunes as each searched for the perfect match. 

The stage will be set in CSC’s original Boston Common location at the Parkman Bandstand.  Performances are Tuesday – Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 7:00 p.m., with a matinee Saturday at 3:00 p.m.  All performances are free and open to the public.

This summer marks CSC’s 12th annual Free Shakespeare on the Common offering. Last year’s “The Taming of the Shrew” drew more than 100,000 people. Since its inception, CSC has played to 850,000 people. 

Steven Maler is the Founding Artistic Director of Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, which became a program of the Citi Performing Arts Center in 2005.  He most recently directed the American Premiere of Peter Eötvös’ operatic adaptation of “Angels in America”  for Opera Boston and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
