LaBute's "Fat Pig"
In New England Premiere
At SpeakEasy Stage

In today's image-focused society, what would you do if the person you were dating was seriously overweight? And not just fat, but obese?

And even if it didn't matter to you, and the other person was quite comfortable with his or her weight, what about your friends? And your co-workers? And your family?

Could your loved ones' weight actually impact your other relationships? And your career? And your own self-esteem?

Those are but a few of the questions posed in Neil LaBute's provocative comic-drama "Fat Pig," receiving its New England premiere at SpeakEasy Stage from March 16 - April 7 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts. Paul Melone, who previously helmed SpeakEasy productions of "Our Lady of 12th Street, "The Moonlight Room" and "The Shape Of Things," directs.

In "Fat Pig," Tom, a handsome young career guy starts dating Helen, a bright sexy librarian who happens to be plus-sized, and then some. As he reluctantly falls in love, his co-workers tease him mercilessly about his new relationship, forcing him to come to terms with own preconceptions about the importance of beauty and conventional good looks.

"Fat Pig" had its world premiere in 2004 at the Manhattan Class Company Theatre in New York, starring Jeremy Piven of HBO's "Entourage."

The SpeakEasy production will feature Boston University alumnae Liliane Klein as Helen, with James Ryen, Mike Anderson, and Norton Award-winner Laura Latreille rounding out the cast.

The critically acclaimed LaBute has made a name for himself by writing what The New Yorker calls "twisted amorality plays." Since he first burst onto the scene in 1997 with the hit film "In The Company of Men," he has tackled many hot button topics and has been praised for his edgy and unsettling portrayals of human relationships in such plays as "The Mercy Seat," "The Shape of Things," and such films as "Your Friends and Neighbors," "Nurse Betty" and "Possession."
