Alitheia Theatre Company
Debuts With "Steel Magnolias"

Alitheia Theatre Company has chosen "Steel Magnolias" as its premiere production, to be presented at the Cambridge YMCA (820 Massachusetts Avenue) from September 28 - 30. Robert Harling's Southern classic will be directed by Emerson College graduate student Katie Wampler with an all-female cast and crew.

"Steel Magnolias" presents a look at the flawed and likeable women who ascribe to the philosophy that "there is no such thing as natural beauty."

The action takes place in Truvy's Louisiana neighborhood beauty salon where the locals gather to relax, gossip and share news of each other's lives. At the center of the action is a special occasion -- local favorite Shelby is about to wed. She soon faces the difficult and ultimately tragic decision to bear a child against medical advice. Her choice galvanizes the community of women.

Following a successful run in New York, "Steel Magnolias" was adapted into a blockbuster film starring Julia Roberts, Sally Fields, Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacLaine. Two seasons ago, the play was revived on Broadway starring Delta Burke, Frances Sternhagen, Marsha Mason and Christine Ebersol.
