Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo"

Cirque du Soleil, a long-time Boston favorite, returns to town after a two year absence to present "Corteo," an all-new show. "Corteo" will open on Friday, September 8, for a limited run at Suffolk Downs under Cirque's trademark blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau.

"Corteo," which means "cortege" in Italian, is a joyous procession -- a parade of sorts -- imaged by a clown. The show is described as bringing together "the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth."

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strengths and fragility of the clown as well as his wisdom and kindness to illustrate the humanity that is within us all. The lyrical and playful music carries"Corteo" through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

The cast brings together more than 55 artists from 16 countries including Argentina, Armenia, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Italy, Israel, Kenya, Romania, Russian, Spain, and the United Kingdom, the United States and the Ukraine. Once again, the limits of acrobatics will be challenged as creator/director Daniele Finzi Pasca lends his unique touch to Cirque du Soleil's spectacular performances.

Since its debut in April of 2005 in Montreal, "Corteo" has visited 8 cities throughout Canada and the United States. Prior to its Boston performances, the show will played limited engagements in New York and Chicago.
