"Respect: A Musical Journey"
Opens At Stuart Street Playhouse September 21

"Respect: A Musical Journey," the acclaimed show celebrating women through America's popular music, will begin previews at the Stuart Street Playhouse on Thursday, September 21. The engagement will be a limited run through November 26.

Written by popular music authority Dorothy Marcic, the production chronicles four women and the songs they listened to at important milestones in their lives -- from George Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me" to Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It."

With an ensemble cast and a band on stage, the show features more than 50 numbers including "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend," "Mr. Sandman," "Whatever Lola Wants," "Dedicated To The One I Love," "These Boots Are Made For Walking, "I Am Woman," "I Will Survive," and of course, the title song, "Respect."

Marcic commented, "In creating 'Respect,' I used popular music to reveal how women have evolved throughout the 20th century. Because 'Respect' is a show filled with music and humor, it has had tremendous reactions from all ages and genders -- even men love this show."

Marcic is a professor at Vanderbilt University and the author of twelve books, including RESPECT: Women and Popular Music, the basis for this show.

"Respect" debuted as a one-woman show in 1999. It has played in a dozen U.S. cities as well as in Australia, South Africa, England, Holland and Israel. The Boston production will be directed by David Arisco with musical direction by Phil Hinton.

Of "Respect," the Chicago Tribune said, "'Respect' is a savvy, self-confident, good time!"

The Boston production will feature a versatile case of local actresses portraying a variety of 20th century women. Tiana Checchia, Amiee Collier and Kareema Castro will depict such famous figures as Coco Chanel, Betty Boop and Rosa Parks as well as members of Marcic's own family. Kathy St. George will portray Dorothy Marcic, narrator of her own life story.
