New Rep Opens 2006 Season
With New England Premiere
Of Martin McDonagh's "Pillowman"

New Repertory Theatre will open its season of premieres at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown with the New England premiere of "The Pillowman," Martin McDonagh's celebrated, Tony-Award winning hit that explores the darkest corners of the imagination while examining the blurry line between fantasy and reality. Performances dates are September 6 – October 1, 2006. Tickets go one sale on August 15.

New Rep’s Producing Artistic Director Rick Lombardo will direct a cast set to include John Kuntz, Steven Barkhimer and Phillip Patrone.

"The Pillowman" tells the often disturbing story of Katurian (played by Kuntz), a writer living in an unidentified totalitarian state, whose ghoulish stories suddenly appear to serve as the macabre blueprint for a series of grisly child murders. As the writer faces terrifying interrogation by a good cop/bad cop team employing unconventional techniques, the central question emerges – is an artist responsible for the outcome when life imitates art?

The work premiered at the National Theatre in London in November of 2003, making its American debut in April of 2005 at the Booth Theatre in New York. "Pillowman" garnered an Olivier Award in 2004 for Best New Play, two Tony Awards plus a Best Play nomination, and was named to Time Magazine’s Top 5 of 2005. (Anglo-Irish writer Martin McDonagh is resident playwright at the Royal National Theatre.)

Lombardo commented, “This is a vital play that speaks eloquently to issues of freedom, individual rights, state power and security, approaching them with devastating humor and a shocking irreverence that leads us to question some dearly held beliefs. I am thrilled to do this play with John Kuntz, Steve Barkhimer and Phil Patrone, who in addition to being significant to New Rep are also significant Boston area artists.”

The Arsenal Center for the Arts is located at 321 Arsenal Street in Watertown. This is New Rep’s second season as the resident company at the new Arsenal Center.
