"Puppetry Of The Penis"
Returns In Limited Engagement

“Puppetry of the Penis,” the international comedy hit, returns to Boston (reportedly the most successful city on the show’s last U.S. Tour), for a limited run at Lyric Stage beginning July 12. Performing in the Boston engagement will be Joey Dixon and Preston Levato.

Make no mistake, there are no sock puppets in this show. “Puppetry of the Penis” features two naked penis puppeteers who present the ancient Australian art of genital origami.

Requiring stamina, a certain degree of fortitude and some amazing stretching, the gentlemen on stage manipulate themselves into more than 40 “installations” ranging from The Pelican and The Windsurfer to The Eiffel Tower, The Loch Ness Monster and their signature creation, The Hamburger.

“Puppetry of the Penis” was created by Simon Morley in 1966 as the title of a highbrow art calendar showcasing twelve of his favorite penis installations. It was on New year’s Eve 1997, with a garage full of calendars to sell and burgeoning requests for live demonstrations, that Simon finally decided to unleash his talents on the world.

Morley and David Friend made their performance debut at the 1998 Melbourne International Comedy Festival before touring Australia for the next eight months.

They were a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2000, transferred to the Whitehall Theatre in London’s West End and eventually made it to Montreal’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. Sell-out houses saw it then play for three weeks at Montreal’s prestigious Place de Arts.

The show’s American debut came in 2001, off-Broadway at the John Houseman Theatre, where it ran for a year to sold-out audiences. Engagements in Los Angeles and San Francisco followed, along with European dates in Paris, Barcelona and Madrid. HBO continues to feature “Puppetry” on its hit series, “Real Sex.”
