Open Rehearsals of "N"
At Boston Center for the Arts

Pilgrim Theatre Research and Performance Collaborative will present open rehearsals of "N," a new work for theater by Laura Harrington (this is a work-in-process presentation). Performances at the Boston Center for the Arts’ Black Box Theatre are June 17-18 and June 23-25 at 8 pm with a 2 p.m. performance at June 19. Admission is "pay-what-you-can" with a suggested minimum of $5.

This is a rare opportunity both to take a sneak peek behind the scenes and see Pilgrim's work in progress and ultimately to help shape the development of a new work by contributing to post-event discussions.

The full-scale production of "N" will premiere this September at the BCA Plaza Theatre before touring to New York City's La Mama ETC-- one of the leading venues for experimental theater -- in October of 2006. The image-rich writing style of Laura Harrington ("Hallowed Ground," "Joan of Arc," "Marathon Dancing") provides an appropriate match for the company's signature style of physical and aural collage.

"N" is described as "a phantasmagorical work for theater centering on the figure of Napoleon in his final years of exile on the island of St. Helena. Guarded by 5,000 British soldiers, surrounded by sycophants, toadies and an unforgiving sea, and plagued by rats, the Little Emperor travels back and forth in time as he confronts his legacy and crafts his future legend."

Directed by Kim Mancuso with music design by Katie Down and scenic design by Susan Zeeman Rogers, "N" will feature Pilgrim Theatre's co-founder Kermit Dunkelberg in the title role. Boston chanteuse Belle Linda Halpern portrays Josephine and Jenn Pina plays Joan of Arc, who falls through the ceiling as Napoleon soaks in his bath. The cast (including a Chorus of rats) also features Christopher Crowley, Michael Harrington, Allison Linker, Dev Luthra and Adam Miller. Puppets for the production have been created by Miguel Romero.

The Pilgrim Theatre, whose work is collaboratively developed, is a Resident Company at The Boston Center for the Arts. Over the last decade, they have presented such original productions such as "Faust 2002," "The Tibetan Book of the Dead," "The House Not Touched by Death," "Moon Over Dark Street" and "Letters from Sarajevo," among others.
