Chekhov In The Park With TheatreZone

For its third annual presentation of free outdoor performances, TheatreZone will presents Chekhov in the Park from July 12 -24. Performances, alternating between English and Spanish will take place at Mary O'Malley Park at Admiral’s Hill on the Chelsea waterfront.

“The Seagull,” Chekhov's tale of passionate and unrequited love takes place beside a lake on a Russian country estate. TheatreZone plans to take advantage of the park's natural settings to environmentally stage the production with each act played in a unique location.

Taking a tragicomic look at the tangled relationships of a volatile artistic family, “The Seagull” examines questions of art and nature -- especially the nature of art. This play marked the beginning of Chekhov’s fruitful collaboration with Stanislavsky, the founder of what is considered to be the single most important theater and conservatory for acting in the 20th century, the Moscow Art Theatre.

TheatreZone began staging bilingual works in the park in 2003 with “Lorca in the Park: Blood Wedding” and continued last summer with “The House of Bernarda Alba.” The park's waterfront location inspired TheatreZone to take on “The Seagull” this year. Mark Warhol is composing original music for the production to be performed by Ensemble Warhol.

TheatreZone is Chelsea's offbeat alternative, producing provocative theater works and making participation in the arts accessible to the community both as audience and participant through affordable prices, educational programs and the creation of the Chelsea Theatre Works.

The production scheduled is as follows: English performances are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (July 12, 14, 16, 19. 21. 23); Spanish performances are Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays (July 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24).
