"Shakespeare In Hollywood"
In New England Premiere
From Lyric Stage

Lyric Stage Company continues its 31st season with the New England premiere of Ken Ludwig’s “Shakespeare in Hollywood.” Performance dates are May 6 through June 4. Ludwig is also the author of the Broadway comedies “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Moon Over Broadway.”

The place is Tinseltown, 1934. Sexy starlets, cigar-chomping producers and gossipy columnists collide in a blend of farce, fact and fantasy. When filmmaker Max Reinhardt’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” loses its leading men, madcap magic allows Shakespeare’s Oberon and Puck to play themselves on the silver screen.

“Shakespeare in Hollywood” premiered at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. in September of 2003, and went on to win the Helen Hayes Award (D.C.’s equivalent to the Tony’s) for Outstanding New Play or Musical.

Three-time Elliot Norton award winner Spiro Veloudos directs the production which reunites some of Lyric’s favorite faces. Christopher Chew and Elizabeth Hayes most recently appeared at the Lyric in “A Little Night Music.” Ken Baltin last appeared at the Lyric in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” and was most recently seen in “Ramona Quimby” at Wheelock Family Theatre and in “Scapin” and “Waiting for Godot” at the New Rep. Ilyse Robbins was last on-stage at the Lyric in “Comedy of Errors.” She also choreographed “A Little Night Music.”

Peter A. Carey has appeared at Lyric in “Side Show” and “Assassins;” Robert Saoud has appeared in eight Lyric productions, including "Assassins" and Ludwig’s “Lend Me A Tenor.” Margaret Ann Brady returns to Lyric having appeared long ago in the musical review “Cole.” More recently, she has appeared in SpeakEasy Stage productions of “Johnny Guitar” and “Ruthless!” Caroline deLima was seen in “Side Show,” and more recently appeared in “Follies” and Gloucester Stage Company’s “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well.”
