In a unique partnership, three of Boston’s eminent theatrical organizations are joining to present the New England premiere of the 2003 Tony Award-winning play “Take Me Out.”

The production will be directed by SpeakEasy’s Producing Artistic Director Paul Daigneault. Performances are April 29 - June 11 at the Roberts Studio in the Boston Center for the Arts.

Written by Richard Greenberg, author of “Three Days of Rain,” “The Violet Hour” and “The Dazzle,” “Take Me Out” chronicles the unexpected turn of events that ensue when Darren Lemming, the most charismatic, successful and universally praised players in professional baseball, suddenly decides to come out of the closet.

The play follows the fallout from Lemming’s actions as it ripples through his team, the media and across the nation. The charm of the play comes in the completely personal impact all of this has on Mason Marzac, Lemming’s gay accountant, who learns to love a game he never thought he understood.

A complex, carefully written and humorous mediation on multiple themes from racism to prejudice and homophobia, “Take Me Out” is also a deeply funny and provocative take on America’s favorite pastime.

Ricardo Walker will make his SpeakEasy / Boston Theatre Works debut as Lemming. Neil A. Casey will play Marzac. Rounding out the cast are Christopher Brophy, Ricardo Engermann, Nathaniel McIntyre, Bill Molnar, Robert Najarian, Paul Ricciardi, Ricardo H. Rodriguez, Achilles Vatrikas and Samuel Young.

In addition to three Tony Awards (Best Play, Best Featured Actor - Denis O’Hare -- and Best Director - Joe Mantello), “Take Me Out” also took home the 2003 Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, New York Critics and Outer Circle Critics Awards for Best Play.

“Take Me Out” had its world premiere in London at the Donmar Warehouse in 2002. It premiered in the United States at the Public Theatre in September of 2002 before moving to Broadway in February of 2003, where it ran for nearly a year.

Audiences should note that “Take Me Out” contains adult situations, strong language and nudity.
