“I
Am My Own Wife” Winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize
for Drama Following its acclaimed run at Broadway’s intimate Lyceum Theatre, Doug Wright’s "I Am My Own Wife," starring Jefferson Mays, will play a one week engagement at The Wilbur Theatre from April 19 - 24. Directed by Moises Kaufman, the acclaimed one-man production earned two Tony Awards as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama before completing its Broadway run to begin a limited national tour. Based on a true story and inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright over several years, “I Am My Own Wife” tells the intriguing story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who managed to survive the Nazi onslaught as well as the following repressive Communist regime. Amazingly, she simultaneously created a museum featuring a priceless collection of antiques. Jefferson Mays created the role on Broadway and received unanimous praise for his work. In a performance that was termed “extraordinary” by The New York Times, he plays more than 40 characters during the evening including the controversial figure herself as well as the American writer who became intrigued by her story. For tickets and information, visit www.BroadwayAcrossAmerica.com, call 617-931-2787, or stop by the box office at either The Opera House or the Colonial Theatre. The box office at the Wilbur Theatre will open on April 11. -- OnStage Boston 03/23/05 |
