"The Illusion"
At The Piano Factory
March 17 - 20

"The Illusion," adapted by Tony Kushner from Pierre Corneille's neoclassical French play "L'Illusion Comique," will be the inaugural offering from Small World Big Sky Productions. Directed and designed by Sarah Friedberg, performances are in the Devanaughn Theatre at the Piano Factory in Boston's South End on March 17, 18, 19 at 8:00 PM and March 20 at 2:30 PM.

"The Illusion" tells the story of Pridamant, a guilt-wracked lawyer who pays a visit to the magician Alcandre in search of information about his runaway son. When Alcandre conjures episodes from the son's life, Pridamant finds himself in the midst of an inscrutable tale of passion, love, lunacy, adultery and murder. Just as Pridamant begins to navigate his son's story, Alcandre turns the evening on its head, forcing Pridamant to confront one final, surprising truth about his prodigal offspring.

Since moving to Boston in 2004, director/designer Sarah Friedberg has worked with the Devanaughn Theatre and The Longwood Players, among others. The cast includes both Boston theatre notables and area newcomers -- Christina Burchard, Paul DiMilla, Paul R. Dixon, Charles Hess, Haley Mancini, Tim O'Connor, Jonathan Popp and Jean Sheikh.

One of France's most celebrated dramatists, Pierre Corneille (1606-84) wrote more than thirty plays during his long career. Although best known for his tragedies, Corneille authored a number of comedic works, especially early in his career. "L'Illusion Comique" was completed in 1636, one year before Corneille's masterpiece "Le Cid" premiered in Paris.

Tony Kushner is the author of the two-part "Angels in America," which received numerous accolades including the Pulitzer Prize and two Tony Awards. His other plays include "Hydrotaphia," "A Bright Room Called Day," "Slavs!," "Homebody / Kabul" and "Caroline, or Change." "The Illusion" was first produced in 1988 at the New York Theatre Workshop.
