New Rep On Tour Presents "Cyrano"

New Rep On Tour, sponsored by Fleet, opens its new season with a three-person
adaptation of Edmond Rostand's classic play "Cyrano."  Prior to its tour of schools throughout the Greater Boston area, "Cyrano" will play at New Rep for six public performances only, October 21 - October 24. Doug Lockwood, New Rep's Education Associate and the administrator of New Rep On Tour, will direct the production.

New Rep On Tour brings professional theatrical productions into the classrooms of local high schools and middle schools.  Following each performance, the artists lead a talkback session, allowing students to ask questions and discuss the important topics of the play.  Last season alone, the programming reached more than 8,000 students, many of them in under-served communities.  Teachers have come to look forward to the tour as an annual event in their schools, and student testimonials describe widespread enthusiasm for the productions.

Originally founded in 2000, the tour began as a partnership between New Rep and Brandeis University, becoming a highly successful collaboration between the two organizations.  When Brandeis was unable to continue the program, Rick Lombardo, Producing Artistic Director of New Rep, chose to embark independently, beginning with "Cyrano."  New Rep will conclude its partnership with Brandeis by collaborating in the spring of 2005 to produce "Our Town."

"Cyrano's" performances on New Rep's stage in Newton Highlands marks the beginnings of the theatre's highly anticipated "family series," a program Lombardo plans to develop over subsequent seasons to draw young audiences into the theatre.  As part of New Rep's continued outreach efforts, the run of "Cyrano" will include an ASL-interpreted performance.
