Elliot Norton Awards
To Be Presented

May 17

Theater fans listen up -- it’s that time again.

The 22nd annual Elliot Norton Awards ceremony will be held on Monday, May 17, at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, beginning at 7 P.M.. WBZ-TV’s Joyce Kulhawik will serve as Master of Ceremonies. The awards are named for the eminent critic who passed away last year at the age of 100.

Established in 1982, the Norton Awards acknowledge numerous accomplishments in theater, with nearly 20 awards for excellence bestowed each year on individuals and groups who have made a notable contribution to Boston theater. This year’s honors will include nods for Best Directing, Acting, Musical Performance and others.

Elliot Norton served five terms as a Pulitzer Prize Play Juror and fifteen as a Tony Award nominator. In 1986, he was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. For 48 years, Mr. Norton was a drama critic for Boston newspapers, and for nearly 25 years, he was moderator of the weekly television series, “Elliot Norton Reviews,” on WGBH.

Highly respected by both his colleagues and members of the theater community here and around the world, Mr. Norton received a special Tony Award from the League of American Theatres and Producers in 1971. He was also the author of Broadway Down East, a history of theater in Boston.

Tickets for the 2004 Elliot Norton Awards ceremony are $25 in advance (reservations must be received by May 3); and $35 thereafter. A buffet reception will follow onstage at the Cutler Majestic.

For reservations, call 617-542-9155 or write to The Elliot Norton Awards, c/o Chamber Theatre Productions, 2 Park Plaza, Suite 305, Boston, MA 02116.
