“Lion King” To Roar Right Through Christmas

Due to popular demand, Disney Theatrical Productions and Broadway in Boston have extended the Boston engagement of “The Lion King” through December 26.

Tickets for performances October 5 through December 26 will go on sale March 21 at 9 a.m. Patrons may purchase seats by calling Ticketmaster at 617-921-2787, at the Colonial Theater box office, or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

Currently in its seventh sold out year at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York, “The Lion King” is the winner of six Tony Awards (including Best Musical), eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, the Evening Standard Award for Theatrical Event of the Year, two Olivier Awards, a Theatre World Award, the Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography, two Drama League Awards and a Grammy for Best Musical Show album.

Additionally, Newton’s own Julie Taymor became the first woman in Broadway history to win the Tony as Best Director of a Musical. Taymor, along with Michael Curry, created hundreds of intricate masks and puppets for the show, which is choreographed by Garth Fagan.

“The Lion King,” opening at the newly refurbished Opera House on July 16, is sponsored in Boston by Filene’s Department Stores and is part of the Lexus Area Dealers Broadway in Boston Series.
