Huntington After School Program Tours

"Know the Law!," an after-school program for youth that utilizes drama to increase awareness of Massachusetts Law, will be touring to six Boston Middle Schools in February.

A collaboration between the Huntington Theatre Company and Youth and Police in Partnership (YPP), "Know the Law!" will visit Umana-Barnes Middle School and Mission Hill School on February 6; Grover Cleveland Middle School and Mildred Avenue Middle School on February 12; and Edwards Middle School on February 13.

Now in its 7th season, "Know the Law!" has performed in Studio 210 at the Boston University Theatre, local schools, city events and community centers throughout Boston. Last year it received a citation from the Boston Police Department and was a national finalist for the Coming Up Taller Awards, with other Huntington after-school initiatives. For this school tour, Middle School students (grades six through eight) will view "Know the Law!" scenes of urban conflict, and will participate in a post-show discussion with the group.

"Know the Law!" features student-performed scenes that depict a conflict involving the law and encourages discussion about possible ways to respond. The scenes of urban teenage life attempt to teach young people how a better understanding of Massachusetts' criminal law can help them make informed choices and stay out of trouble. There are 15 participants this year from all over Boston. The students who perform have honed their acting skills by training with local actor and theatre professional Naheem Allah with the Huntington.

Youth and Police in Partnership is a program of Children's Services of Roxbury, Inc. in collaboration with the Boston Police Department. The program strives to improve the relationship between inner-city youth, community members and the Boston Police Department. "Know the Law!" is one component of YPP. The use of drama helps youth and police officers better understand each other. YPP peer leaders also spend time each week at Northeastern University where they are learning problem-solving techniques and roundtable facilitation regarding legal issues.

"Know the Law!" was originally founded in 1992 by the Youth Advocacy Project (YAP) -- a community-based initiative of the MA Public Defender Agency that provides legal and social services to at-risk youth in Boston. In 1997 the Huntington collaborated with YAP to develop "Know the Law!" as a theatrical endeavor. During the past two decades, the Huntington's nationally recognized education programs have served more than 200,000 middle school and high school students.
