Huntington Hosts Festival
Of New Play Readings

The Huntington Theatre Company has announced its first-ever Breaking Ground Festival. Events include the readings of four new plays by writers commissioned through the Stanford Calderwood Fund for New American Plays and a reading of a new musical, featuring some of Broadway’s finest talents.

The Breaking Ground Festival runs from Thursday, March 18, through Sunday, March 21. The readings are free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10. For reservations, call the Huntington Box Office at 617-266-0800.

The Festival will kick off on Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 P.M. with a reading of “Stabbing,” a Calderwood Commissioned work by Stephen Belber, author of the play and screenplay “Tape” and the upcoming Broadway play “Match” (set to open in April and directed by the Huntington's Artistic Director Nicholas Martin).

Saturday will feature readings by three of the four Calderwood Commissioned Huntington Playwriting Fellows: “Sonia Flew” by Melinda Lopez, at 12 P.M.; “Jasper Lake” by John Kuntz, at 4 P.M.; and “Pathétique” by Sinan Unel, at 8 P.M.

The Festival concludes on Sunday, March 21, with a 3 P.M. reading of “Lily,” a new musical by Peter Flynn (book) and Brooks Ashmanskas (music and lyrics), based on Edith Wharton’s novel, “House of Mirth.”

One additional play, still to be chosen, will be read on Friday, March 19, at 7:30 P.M. All events will be held in Studio 210 at 264 Huntington Avenue, adjacent to the Boston University Theatre.
