"Much Ado"
Comes To The Common This Summer

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company will bring “Much Ado About Nothing” to Boston audiences this summer in 21 performances on Boston Common.

Shakespeare’s story of love’s talent for bending men and women to its will, will be presented by The Wang Center for the Performing Arts and the Poduska Family Foundation from July 10 through August 1. This production marks CSC’s 9th annual “Free Shakespeare On The Common” offering; last year’s “Macbeth” drew more than 60,000 people.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino commented, “The free, annual presentations of Shakespeare on the Boston Common are a great example of the rich cultural life in our city. ‘Much Ado About nothing’ will play while Boston is in the national spotlight --with the Democratic National Convention in town -- a great time to show off our assets to the rest of the world. The production will be a terrific centerpiece for Boston.”

“Much Ado” affects two couples: Benedick and Beatrice, stalwart disdainers of love, and Hero and Claudio, two feathers to affection’s winds. Both sets of lovers become victims of artful deception, one pushed together and the other thrown apart despite their wishes.

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company has been presenting free professional Shakespearean productions since 1996. Previous productions have included “Henry V,” “Twelfth Night,” “The Tempest,” “Julius Caesar” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” among others.
