"Tea With Kate"

Kate Mulgrew Is Katherine Hepburn
at The American Repertory Theatre

The American Repertory Theatre has scored a coup of sorts in booking Hartford Stage’s acclaimed production of Matthew Lombardo’s play “Tea At Five.” The portrait of the legendary Katherine Hepburn stars Kate Mulgrew, who garnered glowing reviews for her performances in Hartford.

“Tea At Five,” referring to the tradition of afternoon tea in the Hepburn household, is an intimate look at the legendary screen star from her home in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Act One takes place in 1938. Act Two is set in 1983.

Along the way, Hepburn contemplates her childhood, her education, her beginnings in show business, her heart-breaking romance with Spencer Tracy and more.

While she earned glowing reviews for her re-creation of Hepburn in the original run of the play in Hartford, Mulgrew missed a few performances due to the vocal demands of the role. Mulgrew is perhaps best known at the moment for her role as Captain Janeway on “Star Trek: Voyager,” however, her career encompasses work on the stage, on TV and in film.
