"Carmen On The Common"

Move over Commonwealth Shakespeare Company

Boston Lyric Opera will present the first fully staged opera on Boston Common when it presents two free performances of “Carmen “ on Friday and Saturday, September 20 and 21. Showtime is 7 P.M.

Conducted by BLO Music Director Stephen Lord and directed by BLO Artistic Director Leon major, this two and a half hour version of George Bizet’s “Carmen” will be sung in English with English text projected on large TV monitors.

This special open air production will mark the finale of the BLO’s 25th Anniversary Season. Known for its multicultural casting, “Carmen” features Jossie Perez as Carmen, John Bellemer as Don Jose, Guiping Deng as Micaela and Robert Honeysucker as Escamillo.

BLO will also sponsor a Family Day event on Saturday September 21 on Boston Common from 1 to 5 P.M. Kids will have an opportunity to explore the arts with a carnival of games, music and drafts. Showing their support for the BLO, several of Boston’s outstanding cultural groups have created artistic activities for Family Day. They include Boston Public Library, Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Children’s Museum, The Huntington Theatre Company, ParkARTS, the Wang Center’s Suskind Young at Arts, WGBH and Young Audiences of Massachusetts.

Again, all of this is free -- so take advantage. For more information, call 617-542-6772 or visit www.blo.org.
