“Ain’t
Misbehavin’” Fall is almost here, and one of the first openings of Boston's new theater season comes on September 12 with "Ain't Misbehavin'" at The Huntington Theatre Company. Performances run through October 19. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary and based on an idea by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby, Jr., "Ain't Misbehavin'" will be directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge. "Ain't Misbehavin'" pays tribute to the talents of the legendary Fats Waller, whose skill at stride piano (where the left hand "strides" across the keyboard playing the beat while the right plays the melody) captivated audiences. Featuring the music from the Harlem Renaissance, where swing joined with ragtime and jazz to create an explosive musical movement, "Ain't Misbehavin" was an immediate crowd pleaser when it premiered on Broadway in 1978. From sassy to sultry, this electric celebration of song and dance features such favorites as "The Joint is Jumpin'," "Honeysuckle Rose," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," and "T'Ain't Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do." Marcia Milgrom Dodge will set the Huntington production within the framework of a Harlem rent party -- a gathering hosted by folks who needed to raise money for rent. The highlight of these affairs were pianists such as Fats Waller (a fixture on the rent party circuit), who were hired to entertain the guests and keep the good times rolling all night long. The Huntington will continue its showcase of special "event evenings" for "Ain't Misbehavin." They include: CLUB NIGHTS •NIGHT CLUB, sponsored by The Boston Phoenix for theatergoers 35 and under.
