Tony Curtis Says “Some Like It Hot” Opening January 14 at The Wang
Based on the 1959 Billy Wilder motion picture of the same name (which American Film Institute members voted the best comedy ever), the stage musical showcases a book by Peter Stone, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Bob Merrill. Set in the roaring 20’s, the comedy looks at two musicians who accidentally witness the St. Valentine’s Day massacre and are forced to disguise themselves as two women (Daphne and Josephine) with an all-girl band heading to Miami. The young band singer, and the object of everyone’s affections is Sugar, played in the film by Marilyn Monroe. In the original film, Curtis played one of the two musicians. Forty-plus years later, he will be taking the role of Osgood Fielding III, who woos the affections of a very uncomfortable Daphne. Osgood was played by Joe E. Brown in the film. A previous stage musical, entitled “Sugar” (also by Stone, Styne and Merrill), played Boston in the seventies across the street at the Shubert Theatre and starred Bobby Morse and Tony Roberts. Elaine Joyce played Sugar. “Some Like It Hot” has been re-conceived from “Sugar” and promises a new book by Stone with additional songs from the Jule Styne songbook. Curtis’s film career has included such hits as “Sweet Smell of Success,” “The Defiant Ones,” “The Boston Strangler,” “Houdini” and “The Great Race.” He is also an acclaimed painter and regularly tours the country with exhibitions of his work. Tickets for “Some Like It Hot” are available at the Wang box office, 270 Tremont Street in Boston, or by calling Telecharge at 800-447-7400. -- OnStageBoston 11/15/02 |
